Other Positions: Quarterbacks | Running Backs | Wide Receivers | Tight Ends
In all positions, size does matter to at least some degree. Obviously talent is critical but without the size to play in the NFL - does it really matter how fast a player is or how well he can pass the ball? The intent of these positional reviews is to arm yourself with the conventional wisdom about fantasy positions and typically what is successful. There are always exceptions to every rule, but it is nice to know the rule in the first place. There is a surprising amount of consistency in the measureables of star players.

Height - As expected, the top tight ends are certainly tall and realize that these are receiving tight ends - not just blocking tight ends that tend to be even bigger. The average of 6'4" is actually shorter than the average of all tight ends. Most tight ends are 6'5" or even taller but you need the slightly smaller size to get speed enough to matter as a receiver. Not like they are not already far taller than most any defender. The average height is the same this year as in 2008 and pretty much every year.
Weight - Just like other seasons, there is really not much variation in weight for top tight ends. The average weight is exactly the same from 2008. Surprisingly the two heaviest (Witten and Gates) were among the most successful but after those two, all top receiving tight ends came in between 247 and 258 pounds. Small window there.
Age/Experience - Tight ends are like running backs in that they peak around 27 years old with about six years experience. Gonzalez was the only tight end with more than six years experience. Some tight ends start to matter as early as their second year. This is indicative of the gradual change in the NFL to include the tight ends more in the passing scheme as well as the college ranks producing better players in the position.

This season there are no hot tight ends worthy of fantasy attention. Pettigrew is almost a pure blocker and the others need to get past another player to shine. They all hit the prototypical size other than the comparably small Zach Miller (not the OAK Zach Miller though).
