Other Positions: Quarterbacks | Running Backs | Wide Receivers | Tight Ends
In all positions, size does matter to at least some degree. Obviously talent is critical but without the size to play in the NFL - does it really matter how fast a player is or how well he can pass the ball? The intent of these positional reviews is to arm yourself with the conventional wisdom about fantasy positions and typically what is successful. There are always exceptions to every rule, but it is nice to know the rule in the first place. There is a surprising amount of consistency in the measureables of star players.

Height: The average height went down last year but only an inch and it is still a bit higher than past years that saw 6'0 as the standard top ten height. Steve Smith is a shrimp compared to the others (but do not tell him that) and only two players were less than 6'0".
Weight: It is notable that most of the top wideouts have some bulk to them. The top three weighed more than most running backs and that reflects the need for a wideout to be able to withstand work over the middle. That are always exceptions, but most top wideouts carry some weight.
Age/Experience: Three year breakouts may be the stereotype but to be a top wideout, you'll likely have been playing for at least five years. Notice Moss and Owens hang on in their advancing age. There is no wall for wideouts at 30 years though normally only the best of the best are still playing after that age.

Rookies: This year should be better than 2008 for rookie wideouts and at least the top five are expected to see enough playing time to warrant being taken in a fantasy draft. Unlike previous seasons where the league craved huge wideouts, They all come either moderately sized if not smallish as with Maclin or Harvin. The top three wideouts of 2008 were over 220 pounds each but this class had almost no big receivers.
