Derek Anderson, CLE – Torn MCL

Derek Anderson is getting ready to battle Brady Quinn for the starting QB job in Cleveland during the team’s training camp in a couple of months and according to team officials Anderson’s knee is completely healthy and ready for the 2009 season. Anderson tore the medial collateral ligament in is left knee towards the end of last season and although the injury did not require surgery he was stuck in a brace for 6 weeks. Rehab reportedly went as planned and he has been very active during the Browns’ OTA’s. Now that he’s back to full strength he can focus on winning the starting job.

Tom Brady, NE – ACL Surgery

Patriots’ QB Tom Brady, who has spent the last 8 months recovering from ACL surgery, was a full participant in the team’s recent OTA’s and according to reports his knee is now doing better than expected. Shortly after the surgery last year Brady suffered a series of setbacks that included an infection to the surgically repaired joint.  The medical staff was understandably concerned and team officials weren’t sure if he would be able to recover in time for the start of the 2009 season. The good news is that the infection was controlled and eliminated and his rehabilitation since then has gone smoothly.  In fact in a recent interview the doctor who performed the surgery and has monitored Brady’s recovery said that “with regard to his recovery of strength, I’ve never seen anything quite like it.” Athletes can now return to play from ACL surgery as early as 6 months post-op but it still takes most players anywhere from 12 – 18 months before they can return to pre-injury form. Brady isn’t particularly mobile anyway so his knee will be less of an issue as he works himself back to 100%.
